What People Are Saying About Us
It is a really fun gym that will still push you technically. Loving the Judo and BJJ classes, particularly how the instructors work together to make the lessons complimentary.
I still remember the feeling when I walked into this gym for the first time, almost four years ago. I was slightly frightened and nervous, but also super excited to try something new and start their boxing program. The nervousness faded almost immediately when I spoke to the head coach and owner Ben, whose calm and friendly manner was apparent from the beginning. Throughout the first class, the impression of people being super friendly and helpful deepened. Of course I had problems with coordination and felt unable; however, the way in which newbies are treated is incredibly helpful for gaining confidence. There are literally NO egos on the mats; everyone will take care of each other and help each other as much as they can! The CMD boxing and kickboxing program has a big focus on self defense and made me lose weight, feel safe when I walk home at night and has highly increased my fitness level.
The facilities that the gym has moved to some years ago are great. Everything is clean and tidy, there is a big conditiong space and lots of mat space, which enables classes to be run at the same time without people clashing. The change rooms are a good size and there are lockers available. Bathrooms are hygienic, and the women's change room has a box that is well-stocked with essentials like hairbands and deodorant. The gym is located conveniently close to the city, including cafés and the central bus stops.
Just like the CMD program, the jiu jitsu classes are highly effective for self defence and a feeling of security and fitness. Due to the high amount of body contact it seems daunting at first, but again everyone will help make you feel welcome and ease you into it. The coaches are black and brown belts who are all excellent at breaking down movement sequences so that everyone can understand and apply them, and especially the women's classes proved useful for me. Elements has an extraordinary amount of female grapplers, and the boxing classes have numerous women as well. There are more than 20 BJJ classes a week, and they are conveniently spread throughout the whole day. The martial arts membership enables you to do CMD and BJJ, but also judo and wrestling are offered at Elements.
However, what is probably most important is the community that you will train with. I had to return to Germany soon after I started, and coming back two years later, it felt as if I had never left. The peeps at Elements are like one big crazy, funny, incredibly nice family and you will very soon feel part of it if you start training there.
(And they all lived happily ever after...)
Awesome gym! Friendly atmosphere, good quality coaching, and some of the nicest mats in Canberra. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. Definitely a place I miss!
I dropped in on a whim during a visit to Canberra to share in a training session with the Elements crew in Canberra this afternoon. Thanks so much to the coaches Ben and Eugene for making me feel welcome. I enjoyed Eugene's way of teaching different sequences from a singe position, and I had some really fun and technical rolls to get my training fix away from home 🙂 Will definitely bookmark it as my go-to spot for training in Canberra!
Great gym, friendly people, knowledgeable coaches and all around pleasant place to learn martial arts.
The coaches are professional and down-to-earth, the gym always clean and the class timetable perfect for fitting into a 9 to 5 (morning, lunch and evening classes throughout the week).
Elements also has a refreshingly relaxed culture - senior practitioners are always helpful and supportive of newer members and there is a pleasant lack of macho fanfare.
I decided to take up Bjj after a whole year of going through breast cancer. So when I took a trip to Canberra for a holiday to celebrate the end of my treatments, I wanted to train whilst on the go and found Elements Fitness and Martial Arts. The head coach Ben was very friendly on the phone and offered me free training (1 week free trial for new members) and was very hospitable. I went for a gi all levels class and a women's only class, and had SO much fun laughing and rolling around with other class mates!
The class culture is fun, friendly, filled with laughter yet professional and for a beginner like me was accessible yet very challenging. Ben's classes packs many learning tools and movements in one class but is made easy to understand and explains everything in many different ways, as well as demonstrates as many times at differing speeds so that students can learn well. My class partner Andy who was a blue belt was hilarious! He helped me so many times to solidify the knowledge and explained many concepts I had trouble with.
The women's class was also amazing and Eugene's classes were also extremely well taught. He made sure that everyone understood before moving on, and there were quite a few moves taught in the class which were explained step by step and with alot of demonstrations with and without a demo volunteer. Both instructors stops periodically to check student's understanding before progressing and friendly jokes are thrown in which enhanced my learning.
I got so much out of the classes, and not to mention I was physically pushed to my limit, but was able to stay safe and well looked after the whole time despite having so many health problems. I also got my ass kicked to a pulp while rolling with class mates Ally and Emily in the women's class and got a UFC armbar from Emily! Both of my classmates, even though more experienced, did not go easy on me, but always checked if i was ok and safe. My favourite saying of the week was when Ally said "if you've stopped laughing, you need to stop, take a deep breath in, and keep laughing", which really reflects the joy and passion of the teachers and students of Elements Fitness. I also got to roll with the teacher Eugene which was an honour as I haven't ever done that before! And he gave me the opportunity to practice the moves I learnt and taught me many more tools of bjj in a short few minutes.
As a first time outsider I was warmly welcomed and I felt so personally connected with the people in Elements, and felt very grateful that I had the opportunity to train with such experts of Bjj who are generous and genuine people with a bucket of heart. <3 I highly recommend Elements Fitness!
Great coaches, training partners and facilities... for anyone thinking about starting BJJ or martial arts, Elements is the club to join. It took me a while to step on the mats and was nervous before starting, but I felt right at home after my first class due to the people and 'no-ego' environment.
As a person who historically did not "do" gyms, I cant believe how much I love this one. The trainers are super knowledgeable and the community is very friendly and encouraging. After just a few months of Nick's classes I have been able to lift more than I ever thought possible and have gained so much confidence!
